THE CONSEQUENCES
OF SIN
PRAYERS THAT MOVE MOUNTAINS
Chapter Three
To understand what is going on all around us, we have to understand the laws and rules that govern our world. There are natural laws that govern the universe. The sun and the moon and the stars have a set course. They do not deviate. The laws of gravity hold all things in place. This law is steadfast and firm. Then, there are laws that govern seasons and laws that govern seedtime and harvest. God set all of these laws in place, and they are immoveable. God also set in place rules and boundaries that all of humanity and all of the spirit realm have to abide by. We don’t get to make the rules and the spirit realm doesn’t get to make the rules. God does. This is “Good News” to us because we can trust that the forces that are against us can go only so far and no further. We can then begin to use these rules to our advantage.
God set spiritual laws in place. Then He set the rewards and the punishments for our obedience or our disobedience. This is where the spirit realm comes in. When we are obedient to God’s laws, the spirits are commanded to bless us! “If you follow My decrees and are careful to obey My commands, I will send you the seasonal rains. The land will then yield its crops, and the trees of the field will produce their fruit. Your threshing season will overlap with the grape harvest, and your grape harvest will overlap with the season of planting grain. You will eat your fill and live securely in your own land. I will give you peace in the land, and you will be able to sleep with no cause for fear. I will rid the land of wild animals and keep your enemies out of your land. In fact, you will chase down your enemies (the fallen spirit realm) and slaughter them with your swords (the Word of God). Five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand! All your enemies will fall beneath your sword. I will look favorably upon you, making you fertile and multiplying your people. And I will fulfill My covenant with you. You will have such a surplus of crops that you will need to clear out the old grain to make room for the new harvest! I will live among you, and I will not despise you. I will walk among you; I will be your God, and you will be My people. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so you would no longer be their slaves. I broke the yoke of slavery from your neck so you can walk with your heads held high.” (Leviticus 26:3-13)
So we can see that if we obey our God, He sets in motion laws that govern our obedience. We are blessed in every area of our lives. He commands the rains and the harvest to bless. He commands a surplus of crops. He commands secure dwellings and quiet resting places. He commands peace and rest. He commands that all of our enemies will fall so there will be no cause for fear. Fear is not our portion. Fear of man, fear of the future, fear of failure, fear of lack, fear of disease, fear of death or dying - gone! He breaks the yoke of slavery from our necks, so we will no longer be slaves to anything. But then, listen to this - HE WALKS WITH US! Wow! You think the fallen spirit realm doesn’t tremble when we walk into a room? They do because God is with us. God commands the blessings and all of the heavenly realms rush to carry out His orders. Our God is the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, and when He speaks, nations and armies listen and obey. They can do nothing else because our God commands it. He is the head of Heaven’s Armies, and He walks with us! Oh my!
But, there are also consequences if we choose to disobey God’s laws. “However, if you do not listen to Me or obey all of these commands, and if you break My covenant by rejecting My decrees, treating My regulations with contempt, and refusing to obey My commands, I will punish you. I will bring sudden terrors upon you - wasting diseases and burning fevers that will cause your eyes to fail and your life to ebb away. You will plant your crops in vain because your enemies will eat them. I will turn against you, and you will be defeated by your enemies. Those who hate you (fallen spirit realm) will rule over you, and you will run even when no one is chasing you.”
“And if, in spite of all this, you still disobey Me, I will punish you seven times over for your sins. I will break your proud spirit by making the skies as unyielding as iron and the earth as hard as bronze. All your work will be for nothing, for your land will yield no crops, and your trees will bear no fruit.”
“If even then you remain hostile toward Me and refuse to obey Me, I will inflict disaster on you seven times over for your sins. I will send wild animals that will rob you of your children and destroy your livestock. Your numbers will dwindle, and your roads will be deserted.”
“And if you fail to learn the lesson and continue your hostility toward Me, then I Myself will be hostile toward you with calamity seven times over for your sins. I will send armies against you to carry out the curse of the covenant you have broken. When you run to your towns for safety, I will send a plague to destroy you there, and you will be handed over to your enemies. I will destroy your food supply, so that ten women will need only one oven to bake bread for their families. They will ration your food by weight, and though you have food to eat, you will not be satisfied.”
“If in spite of all this you still refuse to listen and still remain hostile toward Me, then I will give full vent to My hostility. I Myself will punish you seven times over for your sins. Then you will eat the flesh of your own sons and daughters. I will destroy your pagan shrines and knock down your places of worship. I will leave your lifeless corpses piled on top of your lifeless idols, and I will despise you. And for those of you who survive, I will demoralize you in the land of your enemies. You will live in such fear that the sound of a leaf driven by the wind will send you fleeing. You will run as though fleeing from a sword, and you will fall even when no one pursues you.” (Leviticus 26:14-30, 36)
God is not playing. If we refuse to listen to His commands and to obey them, the fallen spirit realm - our enemies and God’s enemies - have the right and the authority to do what they want to do. They want to kill us, to steal from us, and to destroy us, and our choices give them permission to do that. But it is not God’s will that any man should perish. We are not His enemies. We are His prized possession, so God sets in motion circumstances that should bring us to our senses - terror, disease, failed crops, children robbed, unyielding skies, trees that bear no fruit, disaster, calamity, no food. The fallen spirit realm, our enemies, do this. But what we need to understand is that what the enemy means for evil, God means for good. He has come to give us life and to give it abundantly. There is a parable in John 10 that illustrates this.
“I tell you the truth, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber! But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for Him, and the sheep recognize His voice and come to Him. He calls His own sheep by name and leads them out. After He has gathered His own flock, He walks ahead of them, and they follow Him because they know His voice. They don’t follow a stranger, they will run from him because they don’t know his voice.”
Those who heard Jesus use this illustration didn’t understand what He meant, so He explained it to them. “I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not listen them. Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through Me will be saved. They will come and go freely and and will find good pastures. The thief’s purpose is to kill and steal and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”
God sent the good Shepherd, who loves us, to guide us. His purpose is to destroy the works of the enemy. His purpose is to give us a rich and satisfying life. He did that on the cross. He paid the price for our sin. He set us free, but we have to walk in that freedom. We have to go through the Gate - Jesus - and listen to what the Shepherd says. We do hear His voice, and our broken heart responds. The Good Shepherd is leading us to a safe place, a place where our wayward heart once again finds rest.
So if we are experiencing any of these curses, the God of the universe is trying to get our attention. He wants to turn our heart back to Him once again. We are going the wrong way, but all we have to do is turn. When we do, God is waiting with open arms, and He comes with all the powers of the heavenly realms to set us free!
“But at last My people will confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors for betraying Me and being hostile toward Me. When I have turned their hostility back on them and brought them to the land of their enemies, then at last their stubborn hearts will be humbled, and they will pay for their sins. Then I will remember My covenant with Jacob and My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land.” (Leviticus 26:40-42)
Once we come to our senses and humble our heart and pray and seek His face and turn from our wicked ways, God remembers. He remembers His covenant with Abraham and his descendants. That covenant is a covenant of blessing. The LORD said to Abraham, “I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families of on the earth will be blessed through you.” (Genesis 12:3)
It is God's desire to bless us, but He can’t do that if sin is still in our lives. God is looking to create a holy people, those who are completely set apart for Him. So there are certain standards for entering the Kingdom of God. “Don’t you realize that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people - none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God. Some of you were once like that. But you were cleansed; you were made holy; you were made right with God by calling on the name of the LORD Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-11)
If you see yourself in the above paragraph, and you want to change, I have “Good News!” All you have to do is call on the name of the LORD Jesus Christ, and He will save you. He will set you free from the sin inside of you. All you have to do is say, “I am guilty! I am so sorry!” Then as far as the east is from the west, your sins are forgiven. Then you turn your back on your sin and start walking toward Jesus. With your eyes on Jesus, let the good Shepherd guide your way.
However, I want you to know that even though there are very visible sins that God wants to take care of, obedience is far more than “Thou shalt not!” Obedience is a matter of the heart. We could do everything right, but still not be right with God. 1 Corinthians 13 says, "If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn't love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging symbol. If I had the gift of prophecy, and I understood all of God's secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn't love others, I would be nothing. If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it, but if I didn't love others, I would have gained nothing." Love is the most important commandment. Love is the base line of all other commandments. It goes to the heart of who we are. When love is our motive, we are under no law. And this is what love looks like: "Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance." (1 Corinthians 13:4-7)
Jesus said, “If you love Me, obey My commandments. And I will ask the Father, and He give you another Advocate who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it isn’t looking for Him and doesn’t recognize Him. But you know Him, because He lives with you now and later will be in you.” (John 14:15-17) When we choose to obey, we give our love to God. It’s not something we have to do, it is something we want to do, and once we commit our heart to Him, He sends His Holy Spirit. This Spirit guides us, and watch what happens when He does:
“So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.”
“When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like the. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.”
“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!” (Galatians 5:16-23)
So there are rules to our warfare. There are laws set in place. If we obey the laws, we are blessed. If we disobey the laws, we are cursed. But, there is one law that trumps all others - LOVE! Love God, and love one another. When we do this, we have fulfilled the law. We have become like Christ. It is then that God commands the blessing: righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. It is at this point that we have entered the Promise Land, a land flowing with milk and honey. The fallen spirit realm cannot touch us here. We are safe.
PRAYERS THAT MOVE MOUNTAINS:
LORD, I am tired of fooling myself. I do know that those who do wrong will not inherit the Kingdom of God. I have done so many things wrong. You know I have. When You listed the works of the flesh, I could see myself in every one. I give You my lust and my pride and my hostilities and jealousies. I give You my idolatries and drunkenness and wild parties. I am guilty, and I am so sorry. It is against You and You alone that I sinned, but I want to stop. You said that everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved, so I am calling Your name - JESUS! I need You. Please come rescue me. I ask this in Your mighty name. AMEN
__________
LORD, You know my heart. You know my every thought. You know how short I fall from being holy, but I want to be. You know me. I do love You. I am so sorry that I have let You down. But You said in 1 Corinthians 6:11 that they were made holy by calling on Your name. So Jesus, I am calling on You. Make me holy. Send Your Spirit to lead me and to guide me into righteousness for Your name sake. Let me hear Your voice clearly so that I can follow You. Let the voice of a stranger not ring true in my ears. LORD, Your purpose on this earth is to destroy the works of the enemy and to give me a rich and satisfying life. LORD, fulfill Your purpose in me. Destroy my pride and my stubbornness and my need to control others so that You can do with me what You want. I come to You with heart-wide-open, LORD. Heal me and set me free. I ask this in the mighty name of Jesus. AMEN
__________
LORD, You said that we can do anything, but if we don’t have love, it means nothing. LORD, teach me to love. LORD, I am guilty of being jealous and boastful and proud and rude. Please, forgive me. I am guilty of holding on to the past and what people have done. Forgive me, LORD. Now I am asking that You teach me how to love. Teach me how to be patient and kind. Give me endurance. LORD, I am sorry for giving up on people. You said love never gives up, it always hopes, it always endures. LORD, send hope. Let it enter my heart with power. LORD, let love rule my life. Let love be the motive for everything I say and do. I ask this in Your holy name, Jesus. AMEN
________
LORD, You said in Luke 11:11-13, "You fathers - if your children ask for a fish, do you give them a snake instead? Or if they ask for an egg, do you give them a scorpion? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father fie the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him." LORD, You said to ask You for the Holy Spirit, so I am asking. I need the Spirit of Truth to come into my life and to lead me and to guide me into all truth. I ask this in Jesus' name. AMEN
AMEN
